Cardiology often does their own monitoring for patients on amiodarone, however for patient’s that live far from James a Haley VA the amiodarone monitoring can be done by the PCP at the CBOC for convenience. These are the recommendations for amiodarone monitoring:
Q6 Months - the patient will need an EKG and the following labs:
Magnesium
Potassium
LFTs
TSH
Q12 Months -
The patient will the labs and EKG as mentioned and above AND they will need a Chest X ray and Eye examination with the eye clinic to evaluate for toxicity
As needed: PFTs if the patient develops symptoms
All of these can be documented in a note titled “Amiodarone - pharmacy amiodarone monitoring note” for consistency
***For any questions or concerns regarding abnormalities that arise in the monitoring, the patient can be referred to cardiology or a cardiology E consult can be done for recommendations for adjustments
